Output optical cable curing

Optical cables are primarily cured using high-intensity UV light, with modern systems favoring UV LED technology for efficiency, speed, and consistent coating quality.

Traditional UV Lamp Curing

Historically, high-intensity UV arc lamps or microwave-excited UV lamps have been used to cure fiber optic coatings. These lamps generate UV light by passing electric arcs or microwaves through a glass tube containing high-pressure mercury vapor, producing a broad spectral output from below 200 nm to above 800 nm. However, only the UV energy in the 250–420 nm range is effective for curing fiber coatings, making much of the energy produced by traditional lamps inefficient.

These systems also consume significant electricity (up to 6 kW per lamp), generate excess heat, and require frequent maintenance, increasing operational costs.

UV LED Curing

Modern fiber optic manufacturing increasingly uses UV LED curing systems, which offer several advantages over traditional lamps: Energy Efficiency: UV LED systems consume significantly less power (as low as 600 W), reducing electricity costs and carbon emissions. Narrow Spectrum: LEDs emit UV light at specific peak wavelengths (e.g., 365 or 395 nm) with a narrow full width half maximum (~20 nm), ensuring that nearly all emitted energy is effective for curing. Process Speed and Consistency: UV LED systems can cure coatings at high speeds (up to 3,400 meters/min) while providing uniform coverage around the fiber circumference, improving product quality and yield.

Reduced Heat and Environmental Impact: LEDs generate less surface heat, do not contain mercury, and do not produce ozone, making them safer and more environmentally friendly. Advanced Optics: Systems often include Fiber Reflector Units (FRUs) to direct UV energy evenly around the fiber, and some feature integrated irradiance monitoring for precise process control. Applications in Optical Cable ManufacturingUV curing is applied at multiple stages of fiber and cable production: Fiber Coating: Protects the glass fiber, providing flexibility, strength, and resistance to environmental degradation.

Ribbon Matrix Encapsulation: UV-curable polymers encapsulate multiple fibers to form ribbon cables. Jacketing and Marking: UV inks are used for color coding, labeling, and protective coatings on the cable jacket.

Summary

The output optical cable curing method has evolved from traditional high-intensity UV lamps to UV LED systems, which offer faster curing, lower energy consumption, improved consistency, and reduced environmental impact.
