PON is called a passive optical network

PON stands for Passive Optical Network, a fiber-optic system that delivers high-speed data, voice, and video services using unpowered optical components. A Passive Optical Network (PON) is a telecommunications network that uses fiber-optic cables to connect a central data source to multiple endpoints without requiring powered devices along the transmission path. The term "passive" refers to the use of optical splitters, which divide a single optical signal from the central office (or Optical Line Terminal, OLT) to multiple end users, such as homes or businesses, without the need for electrical power in the field.

Key Components of a PONOptical Line Terminal (OLT): Located at the service provider's central office, it manages upstream and downstream traffic and serves as the network control point. Passive Optical Splitters: These devices split the optical signal from the OLT to multiple fibers, enabling a point-to-multipoint topology. Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs): Located near end users, these devices receive the optical signal and convert it into usable data, voice, or video services.

How PON Works

In a PON, the downstream signal from the OLT is broadcast to all connected ONUs through the passive splitters.

Each ON

U checks the data frames and accepts only those addressed to it. For upstream communication, multiple ONUs share the same fiber using time-division multiple access (TDMA), allowing signals to be combined without interference. This architecture reduces the number of fiber runs and eliminates the need for powered equipment between the central office and end users, lowering costs and improving reliability.

Advantages of PONCost-effective: Fewer fibers and no powered devices in the field reduce installation and maintenance costs. Energy-efficient: Passive components require no electricity, saving power. High bandwidth: Modern PON standards, such as GPON, XGS-PON, and 10G-PON, support multi-gigabit speeds suitable for FTTH (Fiber to the Home), enterprise, and smart city networks.

Reliable and low-maintenance: Passive components are less prone to failure and immune to electromagnetic interference.
