Causes of Fiber Optic Cable Bubbling

Fiber optic cable bubbling is typically caused by moisture ingress, manufacturing defects, or excessive heat, which compromise the cable's protective layers and can lead to signal degradation.

Physical and Environmental Causes

Moisture Ingress: Water or high humidity can penetrate the cable jacket or cladding, causing localized swelling or bubbling. This is especially common in outdoor or underground installations where the cable is exposed to rain, groundwater, or condensation. Moisture can also lead to microbending, increasing signal attenuation and potential data errors.

Excessive Heat: Exposure to high temperatures, either from environmental conditions or nearby electrical equipment, can soften the cable's polymer jacket. This may result in bubbles forming as trapped air or moisture expands, weakening the cable structure and potentially distorting the optical signal. Mechanical Stress: Improper handling, tight bends beyond the minimum bend radius, or crushing forces during installation can damage the cable layers.

These stresses can create microvoids or delamination, which may appear as bubbling on the cable surface.

Manufacturing and Material Defects

Defective Jacket or Coating: In some cases, bubbles form due to imperfections during the extrusion of the cable jacket or coating. Air pockets trapped during manufacturing can expand over time, especially under heat or pressure, leading to visible bubbling. Chemical Reactions: Certain environmental chemicals or UV exposure can react with the cable materials, causing localized swelling or blistering.

This is more common in industrial or outdoor installations where cables are exposed to harsh conditions.

Preventive Measures

Proper Installation: Avoid exceeding the cable's bend radius, and protect cables from crushing or impact during deployment. Environmental Protection: Use sealed conduits, gel-filled cables, or armored jackets for outdoor or underground installations to prevent moisture ingress. Temperature Management: Keep cables away from heat sources and ensure adequate ventilation in enclosed spaces.

Quality Control: Inspect cables for manufacturing defects before installation and use high-quality materials with proven durability. Understanding these causes helps in both preventing fiber optic cable bubbling and mitigating its impact on network performance, ensuring reliable data transmission.
