Phase wire terminals of the distribution box

Phase wires (live wires) in a distribution box are connected to the line terminals of circuit breakers or distribution blocks to safely distribute power to individual circuits.

Connecting Phase Wires

In a single-phase distribution box, the incoming phase (live) wire is connected to the line terminal of the main MCB. From there, the phase is distributed to individual single-pole MCBs for each load. For special or high-power loads, double-pole MCBs may be used, connecting both phase and neutral through the breaker.

The neutral wire bypasses single-pole breakers and connects directly to the neutral busbar, while the protective earth (PE) wire is connected to the earth busbar. In a three-phase distribution box, each of the three phase wires (L1, L2, L3) is connected to the line terminals of the respective circuit breakers. Each phase carries alternating current with a 120° phase shift, ensuring balanced load distribution.

The neutral wire is connected to the neutral busbar, and the earth wire is connected to the earth busbar for safety.

Using Distribution Blocks

For complex installations or high-current applications, power distribution blocks (PDBs) mounted on DIN rails can be used to collect and distribute phase wires. These blocks allow multiple wires to be connected to a single phase terminal, supporting both copper and aluminum conductors. They provide mechanical stability, finger-safe protection, and short-circuit resistance, and can be cross-connected using flat copper bridges for flexible distribution.

Safety Considerations

Always ensure the phase wire is connected to the correct line terminal marked on the breaker or distribution block. Maintain proper phase sequence in three-phase systems to avoid imbalanced currents and overheating. Use appropriately rated MCBs and RCCBs to protect circuits from overcurrent, short circuits, and earth faults.

Ensure all connections are tight and secure to prevent arcing or loose contacts. Proper connection of phase wires ensures safe, efficient, and reliable power distribution in both residential and industrial electrical systems.
