Relay Protection Sensitivity Testing Methods

Relay protection sensitivity tests ensure that protective relays detect internal faults accurately while remaining stable under external or through-fault conditions.

Purpose of Sensitivity Testing

The sensitivity test of a protection relay confirms that the relay operates correctly for faults occurring within its designated protection zone and does not respond to external faults. This is crucial to prevent equipment damage, maintain system stability, and ensure selective tripping of circuit breakers. Sensitivity testing is particularly important for high-impedance differential relays and restricted earth fault (REF) relays.

Test Equipment

Typical equipment required includes: Primary Injection Test Kit: Injects large currents directly into current transformer (CT) circuits to simulate real fault conditions. Secondary Injection Test Kit: Simulates relay inputs with controlled currents and voltages. Phase Angle Meter and Clamp Meter: For measuring current and phase relationships in REF testing.

1-phase AC Generator Kit: Used for generating test currents in REF relay tests.

General Procedure

Safety Precautions: Isolate the relay, implement lockout/tagout procedures, maintain safe distance, wear PPE, and ensure proper grounding.

C

T Verification: Check CT polarity, ratios, and wiring connections to avoid incorrect relay operation. Primary Injection: Inject current into one set of CTs while reversing the polarity of another CT. Gradually increase the current until the relay operates, recording the minimum current required for operation.

Secondary Injection: Apply controlled secondary currents to simulate internal faults and verify relay response. Stability Check: Inject through-fault currents (external faults) to ensure the relay does not operate incorrectly, confirming stability. Record Results: Document all measured currents, differential currents, and relay operation points for verification and compliance purposes.

Special Considerations for REF Relays

Remove or bypass the neutral earthing resistor to facilitate measurement. Use short-duration power supply switching to prevent relay damage. Ensure no CT saturation or incorrect connections before testing.

Standards and References

Relay sensitivity testing should comply with relevant standards such as IEC 60255, IEEE C37 series, and manufacturer-specific guidelines. Regular testing, typically annually or as recommended by operating experience, ensures reliability and early detection of potential relay failures. By following these procedures, engineers can verify that protective relays are sensitive enough to detect internal faults while remaining stable under normal and external fault conditions, ensuring safe and reliable operation of the electrical system.
