Cold splicing method for leather cables

A cold splice joins leather cables mechanically without heat, using crimp connectors or compression fittings to ensure a secure, insulated connection.

Tools and Materials Needed

Wire stripper or sharp knife to remove insulation from cable endsCold splice connector (butt splice or mechanical crimp) sized for the cableCrimping tool or pliers for mechanical compressionHeat-shrink tubing or electrical tape for insulation protectionMultimeter (optional) to test continuityStep-by-Step Cold Splice ProcedurePrepare the Cable Ends Strip the leather cable ends carefully to expose the conductor without damaging the strands. Ensure the exposed length matches the connector specifications. For multi-strand cables, twist the strands lightly to prevent fraying.

Insert into Cold Splice Connector Slide each stripped cable end into the respective side of the cold splice connector. Ensure the conductor is fully seated inside the metal sleeve for maximum contact. Crimp the Connector Using a crimping tool or pliers, compress the connector firmly around the cable strands.

The goal is a high-pressure, gas-tight connection that prevents oxidation and ensures low electrical resistance, similar to standard cold splice techniques used in electrical wiring. Insulate the Joint Slide heat-shrink tubing over the splice before crimping, then move it over the joint and shrink it using a heat source if available. If heat is not used, wrap the splice with high-quality electrical tape, overlapping the insulation on both sides to create a moisture-resistant seal.

Test the Connection Use a multimeter to check continuity and ensure the splice is electrically sound. The mechanical integrity should also be checked by gently tugging the cable ends to confirm a secure hold.

Tips for Best Results

Choose a connector that matches the cable gauge and type. Avoid excessive twisting or bending of the leather cable to prevent internal damage. Ensure the insulation fully covers the splice to prevent short circuits or environmental damage.

For multi-bundle or fiber-reinforced leather cables, separate strands carefully and maintain proper alignment to avoid stress points. Cold splicing is ideal for situations where heat cannot be applied or where a quick, reliable mechanical connection is needed. It provides a durable, low-resistance joint while preserving the integrity of the leather cable insulation and structure.
