Standard wiring diagram for on-site power distribution box

A standard power distribution box typically includes a main MCB, RCCB, sub-circuit MCBs, neutral and earth links, with wiring arranged to safely distribute electricity to all connected loads.

Key Components

Main MC

B (Double Pole): Acts as the main switch, usually rated 63A for domestic installations, connecting the incoming phase and neutral supply to the distribution box.

RCC

B (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against leakage currents, electrical shocks, and insulation faults. Typically rated 30mA for single-phase domestic systems.

Sub-

Circuit MC

Bs (Single Pole or Double Pole): Protect individual circuits such as lighting, sockets, or appliances. Ratings vary (e.g., 10A, 16A, 20A) depending on the load. Neutral Link: Distributes the neutral wire to all sub-circuits.

Earth Link: Connects all protective earth wires to the grounding system for safety.

Wiring Sequence

Incoming Supply: The phase (live) and neutral wires from the utility or meter enter the distribution box.

Main MC

B Connection: The incoming supply is connected to the main MCB. When switched on, it energizes the entire distribution system.

RCC

B Connection: The output of the main MCB is connected to the input of the RCCB.

The RCC

B output then feeds the sub-circuit MCBs.

Sub-

Circuit Distribution: Each sub-circuit MCB is connected to its respective load.

Single-pole MC

Bs connect the live wire, while the neutral is routed through the neutral link. Earthing: All earth wires from the loads and the supply are connected to the earth link, which is bonded to the grounding electrode.

Typical Layout

Sub-circuit MC

Bs arranged in rows beneath the RCCB. Neutral and earth bars positioned on the sides for easy connection.

Each MC B labeled according to the area or appliance it serves (e.g., kitchen, living room, AC unit),. Safety Considerations Always turn off the main supply before working on the distribution box. Ensure correct sizing of MCBs and RCCB according to load requirements. Maintain proper color coding for live, neutral, and earth wires (e.g., red/brown for live, black/blue for neutral, green/yellow for earth). Verify all connections are tight and secure to prevent overheating or arcing. This standard wiring approach ensures safe and organized power distribution, simplifies troubleshooting, and allows for future expansion of circuits.
