Cable tray and cable laying construction

The cable tray laying process involves careful planning, material preparation, route marking, support installation, cable laying, grounding, labeling, and final inspection to ensure a safe and efficient electrical system.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation begins, review the approved shop drawings to understand the layout, tray types, lengths, and locations within the building. Mark the tray routes, ensuring horizontal and vertical runs are coordinated with other services, maintaining proper clearance for cable pulling and future maintenance. Select the appropriate tray type (ladder, perforated, solid-bottom, or wire mesh) based on load, ventilation, and environment.

Verify that all materials, including trays, ladders, fittings, and accessories, meet project specifications and are free from damage.

Support and Mounting

Install the hanging system and supports according to design specifications. Supports should be spaced properly, typically 1. 5 to 3 meters apart depending on tray type and load.

Ensure that supports are level and aligned to prevent sagging. Cable trays should be stored horizontally on flat surfaces with timber supports to prevent deformation before installation. All installation work must comply with safety standards such as IEC 61537, NEC Article 392, and local building codes.

Cable Laying

Lay cables in an organized manner, avoiding excessive bending and ensuring proper spacing. Cable fill should not exceed 40% of tray capacity to prevent overheating. Use cable ties or straps to separate cables by voltage and function, leaving slack for expansion or future adjustments.

When passing through fire-rated walls or floors, use appropriate fire-stopping measures to prevent fire spread.

Grounding and Bonding

Metal trays must be properly grounded and bonded to maintain electrical safety. Use bonding jumpers across tray sections to ensure continuity and prevent electrical hazards.

Labeling and Documentation

Label all cables clearly for identification and troubleshooting. Maintain updated documentation, including wiring maps and installation records, for future maintenance and audits.

Inspection and Maintenance

Conduct a thorough final inspection to check for loose clamps, misalignment, overfilled sections, or unsupported spans. Routine maintenance should include checking for corrosion, loose wires, or broken clamps to ensure long-term reliability and safety.

Safety and Competency

All personnel must attend safety inductions and demonstrate competency in cable tray installation. Supervisors should monitor work closely and provide retraining if necessary. Unsafe conditions must be corrected before proceeding with installation.

By following these steps, the cable tray system will be safe, scalable, and easy to maintain, providing reliable support for electrical and communication cables throughout the facility.
