How to handle defects in the galvanization of cable trays

Defects in galvanized cable trays can be managed by proper surface preparation, inspection, and targeted repair techniques such as brushing, sanding, or zinc-rich coatings.

Common Galvanization Defects

Rough or Irregular Surface: Caused by pre-existing surface irregularities, high silicon or phosphorus content in steel, or excessive immersion time in the zinc bath, resulting in uneven zinc layers. Slag Inclusions: Small nodules from bath agitation that do not affect corrosion resistance but may require filing or sanding for aesthetic purposes. White Rust: White or gray zinc oxide/hydrate spots from high humidity during storage or transport; removable by brushing or sanding and preventable by storing in dry conditions.

Bare Spots or Uncoated Areas: Often due to poor surface preparation, welding slag, grease, or cavities; these can compromise corrosion protection if large. Poor Adhesion: Zinc coating may flake off due to residual oil, rust, mill scale, or improper fluxing.

Handling and Repair Techniques

Surface Cleaning: Remove oil, grease, rust, and welding residues before galvanizing using degreasing, pickling, and fluxing. Mechanical Correction: File, sand, or wire-brush rough surfaces, slag inclusions, or white rust to restore smoothness and remove superficial defects.

Zinc-

Rich Coatings: Apply zinc-rich paint or metalizing sprays to repair small bare spots or minor coating deficiencies. Inspection and Storage: Inspect galvanized trays for uniform coating thickness and defects immediately after galvanization. Store in dry, ventilated areas to prevent white rust formation.

Preventive Measures

Ensure proper steel selection with controlled silicon and phosphorus content. Maintain correct bath temperature and immersion time to avoid excessive or uneven zinc deposition. Remove all welding slag and surface contaminants before galvanizing.

Use adequate fluxing and pickling procedures to promote zinc adhesion. By combining thorough surface preparation, careful inspection, and targeted repair methods, defects in galvanized cable trays can be effectively managed, ensuring long-term corrosion resistance and structural integrity.
