Optimal Configuration of a Three-Level Distribution Box

A three-level distribution box typically consists of an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB) at the primary level, Molded-Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) at the secondary level, and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) at the tertiary level, with appropriate leakage protection. Hierarchical Structure1. Primary Distribution (ACB) The primary level is equipped with an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB), which handles the main incoming power from the transformer or utility source.

The AC

B is selected with a short-time delay function (0. 1–0. 5s) to coordinate with downstream devices and ensure selective protection.

Its rated current is typically 1. 2 to 1. 5 times the transformer capacity, and the short-circuit breaking capacity must exceed the maximum short-circuit current at the installation point.

This level serves as the main conversion point in TN-C-S systems and provides protection for the entire distribution network. 2. Secondary Distribution (MCCB) The secondary level uses Molded-Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) to distribute power to various branch circuits.

Thermomagnetic MCC

Bs are suitable for general loads, while electronic MCCBs are used for precise protection and communication requirements. Coordination with the primary ACB is essential to maintain selectivity. For motor circuits, a D-type tripping curve is recommended to handle inrush currents without nuisance tripping.

3. Tertiary Distribution (MCB) The tertiary level consists of Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) mounted on DIN rails. These are modular and designed for specific load types: Type B (3–5 In): For purely resistive loads and lighting circuitsType C (5–10 In): For general mixed loads and socket circuitsType D (10–20 In): For inductive loads such as motors and transformers Each terminal circuit at this level should also include leakage protection, either via an RCBO or a separate RCD, to ensure safety against earth faults.

Design Principles

Hierarchical Branching: Power flows from the main distribution board to secondary boards, then to tertiary switch boxes, following the principle of “one machine, one switch” at the tertiary level to avoid bypassing levels. Separate Circuits: Power and lighting circuits should be separated, with distinct switch boxes for each type of load. Minimized Distances: Distribution boards should be located close to concentrated loads, with tertiary switch boxes ideally within 3 meters of the controlled equipment.

Environmental Safety: Installation must consider operational, protective, and maintenance environments to ensure safe and reliable operation. This configuration ensures selective protection, reliability, and safety, making it suitable for industrial, commercial, and construction site applications.
