Cable series connection to distribution box

Cables are connected to a distribution box by first linking the main supply to the main MCB, then distributing power through protective devices to subcircuits, ensuring proper grounding and cable sizing.

Main Connection

The incoming power cable (phase and neutral) should be connected to the main MCB or isolator of the distribution box. For single-phase systems, a double-pole MCB is typically used as the main switch, handling the full load of the system (e.g., 63A for domestic installations) ( ). Ensure the cable cross-section is sufficient to carry the anticipated load; for example, a 16 mm² copper cable is commonly used for a 60A single-phase supply ( ).

Series Distribution to Subcircuits

From the main MCB, the output is connected to an RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) to provide protection against leakage currents ( ). The phase wire from the RCCB is then distributed to the input terminals of individual MCBs for each subcircuit.

Single-pole MC

Bs are used for standard loads, while double-pole MCBs may be used for special loads requiring both phase and neutral protection ( ). The neutral wires from each subcircuit are connected to a neutral bus bar, and all earth wires are connected to an earth bus bar. The metallic body of the distribution box should also be earthed ( ).

Cable Requirements and Safety

The gauge of the connecting cables must be at least equal to the incoming cable gauge ( ). If the distribution box feeds another unit, an external fuse should be installed before the next box ( ). Always switch off the main power before connecting or disconnecting cables ( ).

Ensure proper labeling of terminals, MCBs, and subcircuits for maintenance and troubleshooting ( ).

Summary of Steps

Connect the incoming phase and neutral to the main MCB. Connect the output of the main MCB to the RCCB. Distribute the phase from the RCCB to individual MCBs.

Connect neutral wires to the neutral bus bar. Connect earth wires to the earth bus bar and metallic enclosure. Verify cable sizes, protective devices, and proper labeling.

Test the system before energizing to ensure safety and compliance ( ). Following these steps ensures a safe, code-compliant series connection from the main supply to all subcircuits in the distribution box.
