How many PONs are in one optical transceiver box

Typically, one optical transceiver (PON module) supports a single PON interface, which can serve multiple end users through passive splitters.

Overview

A PO

N optical transceiver, such as a GPON or XGS-PON SFP/SFP+ module, is designed to handle one PON port per module. This single PON interface connects to the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) and communicates with multiple Optical Network Units (ONUs) or Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at the customer premises. The transceiver performs electrical-to-optical (E-O) conversion for downstream signals and optical-to-electrical (O-E) conversion for upstream signals, managing the data flow for all connected users on that PON line.

Capacity and Sharing

Although a single PON module supports only one PON interface, it can serve multiple subscribers because the downstream signal is broadcast through a passive optical splitter, and upstream transmissions are coordinated using Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). Depending on the PON standard and splitter ratio: GPON: Typically supports 32 to 64 ONUs per PON port, with some deployments reaching 128 ONUs. XGS-PON: Supports similar or higher numbers of ONUs due to higher bandwidth capacity.

NG-PON2: Can support multiple wavelengths, effectively multiplying the number of PONs per OLT chassis, but each transceiver still handles one wavelength/PON interface.

Scaling

To increase the number of PONs in an OLT chassis, service providers install multiple PON modules, each providing a separate PON interface.

High-end OL

Ts can accommodate dozens of PON modules, allowing a single chassis to manage hundreds of ONUs across multiple PON lines.

Summary

One optical transceiver box (PON module) = one PON interface.

Each PO

N interface can serve multiple ONUs/ONTs via passive splitters. Multiple transceivers in an OLT chassis allow scaling to support many PONs and thousands of subscribers. This design ensures cost-effective, scalable deployment of fiber broadband networks while maintaining high efficiency and quality of service.
