Libya Broadcasting Dedicated Drop Fiber Cable

Libya's broadcasting and telecommunications infrastructure is being significantly enhanced through dedicated fiber-optic connections, anchored by the Medusa subsea cable and domestic fiber networks.

Medusa Subsea Cable Integration

Libya is now connected to the Medusa submarine cable, an 8,700-kilometre, 24-pair fiber-optic system with a capacity of 20 Tbps per pair, linking North Africa directly to Europe. The cable lands in Tripoli and Benghazi, providing Libya with diversified international connectivity and reducing reliance on older, congested routes. This infrastructure enables high-speed internet, supports 5G deployment, and facilitates the expansion of data centers and cloud computing services.

The project is expected to be fully operational between 2025 and early 2026, with a design life of 25 years.

Domestic Fiber Network and Dedicated Drops

The Libyan Fiber Optic Network (LFON) and the broader Next Generation Backbone Network (NGBN) form the domestic distribution system, connecting over 60 stations across Libya. These networks provide dedicated drop fiber connections to broadcasting facilities, government institutions, and private enterprises, ensuring high reliability and low latency for media transmission and digital services. The infrastructure supports LTE, 4G, and 5G technologies, and is designed for scalability to accommodate future bandwidth demands.

Strategic and Economic Impact

The integration of Medusa and domestic fiber networks allows Libya to export telecommunications services to neighboring countries, fostering economic growth and creating employment opportunities in the telecom sector. It also strengthens Libya's digital sovereignty, enabling secure and resilient communication channels independent of distant international hubs. For broadcasting, dedicated drop fibers ensure uninterrupted high-quality signal delivery for television, radio, and online streaming services, enhancing both national and regional media distribution.

Complementary Subsea Systems

In addition to Medusa, Libya is connected via other submarine cables such as Silphium, linking Darnah to Chania in Greece, and the Europe India Gateway (EIG). These systems, combined with LFON, provide redundancy and geographic diversity, critical for maintaining continuous broadcasting and internet services. ConclusionLibya's dedicated drop fiber cable infrastructure integrates international subsea cables like Medusa with a robust domestic fiber network, enabling high-capacity, reliable connectivity for broadcasting and digital services.

This strategic development positions Libya as a regional telecommunications hub, supports economic growth, and ensures resilient, high-quality media and internet services across the country.
