Construction around optical cables

Optical cable construction involves creating a core for light transmission, surrounding it with cladding, protective coatings, strengthening fibers, and an outer jacket to ensure durability and efficient data transfer.

Core and Cladding Formation

The core is made of high-purity silica glass or plastic, serving as the pathway for light signals. Its diameter and material purity are critical for minimizing signal loss and maximizing transmission distance and speed. Surrounding the core is the cladding, a layer with a lower refractive index that reflects light back into the core, preventing signal leakage and maintaining total internal reflection.

Coating and Strengthening

After the core and cladding are formed, a protective coating is applied to cushion the fiber against bending and mechanical stress. This coating, typically 250–900 microns thick, ensures the fiber remains intact during handling and installation. Strengthening fibers, such as Kevlar® or steel rods, are added to protect the delicate core from tensile and compressive forces, enhancing the cable's durability.

Outer Jacket and Environmental Protection

The outer jacket is the final protective layer, made from materials like PVC, LSZH, or polyurethane. It shields the cable from moisture, fire, UV exposure, and physical damage, making it suitable for indoor, outdoor, or harsh environmental conditions. Depending on the design, cables may use tight buffer or loose tube structures to accommodate different deployment scenarios, such as indoor networks or outdoor FTTH systems.

Manufacturing Process

The fiber begins as a pre-form, a rod of ultra-pure glass, which is heated in a furnace and drawn into thin fibers approximately 125 microns in diameter. A liquid coating is applied immediately and hardened using UV light to ensure toughness. Multiple fibers are then organized into buffer tubes or ribbons, combined with strength members, and encased in the outer jacket.

Installation Considerations

Construction also involves site planning, trenching, or aerial deployment, followed by careful cable laying to maintain proper tension and bending radius. Splicing connects fiber sections using fusion or mechanical methods, and termination attaches connectors like SC, LC, or FC to interface with network equipment. Finally, testing ensures signal quality and loss are within acceptable limits, and documentation supports maintenance and future upgrades.

This multi-layered construction ensures that optical cables provide high-speed, reliable data transmission while withstanding mechanical and environmental stresses.
