Principle of Intensity Fiber Optic Sensor

Intensity-based fiber optic sensors detect environmental changes by measuring variations in the light intensity transmitted through an optical fiber. Working PrincipleIntensity-based fiber optic sensors operate by converting a physical or chemical change into a modulation of light intensity within the fiber. When the fiber is bent, strained, or exposed to a target substance, the light signal experiences attenuation or loss.

This change in intensity is then detected by a photodetector, allowing the sensor to quantify the environmental parameter being measured. Common mechanisms include: Microbend sensors: Periodic microbends in the fiber cause guided light to couple into radiation modes, reducing transmitted intensity. Evanescent wave sensors: Light leaks from the fiber core into the cladding, and interactions with surrounding media alter the intensity, often used in chemical sensing.

Advantages

Simplicity: Only a light source and detector are required, making them easy to implement. Low cost: Compared to phase or wavelength-based sensors, intensity sensors are generally less expensive. Multiplexing capability: Multiple sensors can be placed along a single fiber for distributed sensing.

Flexibility: Can be used in harsh environments, tight spaces, or areas with high electromagnetic interference.

Limitations

Relative measurements: Variations in the light source intensity or fiber losses can affect accuracy. Sensitivity to losses: Connector losses, microbending, macrobending, and misalignment can introduce errors. Calibration requirement: Often requires referencing systems to ensure reliable readings.

Applications

Displacement and pressure measurement: Detecting mechanical changes in structures. Chemical sensing: Using evanescent wave sensors to detect specific substances. Industrial automation: Monitoring object presence or position in factory environments.

Distributed sensing: Long-distance monitoring of strain or temperature along pipelines or bridges. Intensity-based fiber optic sensors are widely used due to their simplicity, robustness, and adaptability, making them suitable for both point and distributed sensing applications in challenging environments.
