What to pay attention to when laying cables in cable trays

Proper planning, secure support, correct cable spacing, and adherence to safety standards are essential when laying cables in cable trays to prevent hazards and ensure reliable operation.

Planning and Layout

Before installation, plan the cable tray layout to ensure short, economical, and safe routes that allow for maintenance and future expansion. Cable trays should be coordinated with building structures, avoiding placement under corrosive pipelines or above thermal lines unless proper spacing and protective measures are used (≥500 mm for insulated thermal pipelines, ≥1000 mm for uninsulated) and corrosion-resistant partitions are installed if necessary. Horizontal spans should avoid placing joints at midpoints or support points, and deflection limits must be observed (≤1/200 of span, or ≤1/150 for spans ≥6000 mm),.

Support and Structural Integrity

Cable trays must have sufficient rigidity and strength to support the weight of cables and accessories. Support arms should typically be spaced 1. 5–3 meters apart, adjusted for specific conditions.

Outdoor or vertical installations near the ground should include protective covers to prevent mechanical damage or environmental exposure. Cable trays should never be used as walkways.

Electrical Safety

Assume all cables are live until verified otherwise. Avoid contact with energized cables to prevent electric shock, arc flash, or electrocution. Ensure all cables, trays, and connections are listed or labeled by a recognized testing laboratory for the installation environment.

Proper grounding and bonding of trays are critical to prevent electrical hazards.

Cable Management

Cables should be secured within trays using nylon straps, binding wires, or metal clips to maintain spacing and prevent movement. Avoid overloading trays, as excessive weight can cause overheating, insulation stress, and fire risk. Follow manufacturer-specified weight limits and conductor spacing guidelines.

Environmental and Fire Precautions

Install sealing devices when trays pass through walls into fireproof or explosion-proof areas, and provide rainproof measures for outdoor transitions. Keep trays free of debris and dust to reduce fire hazards. Maintain proper spacing from heat sources and corrosive substances.

Personal Safety and PPE

Workers should use mandatory PPE, including harnesses, helmets, and safety shoes, especially when working at height. Platforms must be stable, anchored, and inspected regularly. Hand tools and equipment should be checked for damage before use, and work areas should be barricaded with clear signage.

Conduct toolbox talks to ensure all personnel understand hazards and controls.

Compliance and Inspection

Follow OSH

A regulations (29 CFR 1910. 305) and NEC guidance (NEC Section 392. 6(C) and 110.

3(B)) for installation, support, and permissible loading. Regular inspections should verify tray integrity, cable condition, and adherence to spacing and load limits. By following these precautions, cable tray installations can be safe, reliable, and maintainable, minimizing risks to personnel and equipment while ensuring long-term operational efficiency.
