How to connect indoor dual-core flexible optical fiber cables

Use patch cords and adapters to connect dual-core indoor fiber cables safely, ensuring clean, low-loss, and flexible connections.

Preparation and Handling

Before connecting, inspect the cables for any damage, kinks, or bends that exceed the minimum bend radius, as indoor flexible fibers are sensitive to mechanical stress and sharp turns can cause signal loss or breakage. Keep the installation area clean and free of dust, and wear gloves to avoid contaminating the fiber ends.

Use LSZ

H (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) jackets for indoor cables to comply with fire safety regulations.

Connection Method

Terminate the Fiber Ends: Attach compatible connectors (e.g., LC, SC, or ST) to each fiber core using a connector kit or pre-terminated cables. Ensure the connector type matches the network equipment or patch panel. Clean the Connectors: Use lint-free wipes and fiber cleaning pens to remove dust and oil from the ferrules.

Never touch the connector tip with bare hands. Use Adapters and Patch Cords: Inside cabinets or patch panels, connect the two fiber cables via an adapter panel and a short patch cord. The typical structure is: Cable A → Adapter Panel → Patch Cord → Adapter Panel → Cable B.

This method allows flexible reconfiguration, reduces stress on the fibers, and maintains signal integrity. Secure the Cables: Clamp or route the cables carefully to avoid exceeding the maximum pulling tension. Use figure-8 loops for any slack to prevent twisting.

Avoid sharp bends and ensure smooth curves along the cable path.

Testing and Verification

After connection, test the link using standard network testing tools to verify signal strength and check for insertion loss or reflection issues. Proper testing ensures that both cores of the dual-core fiber are transmitting correctly and that the connection meets performance standards.

Best Practices

Maintain minimum bend radius and avoid sharp turns. Keep fibers dry and dust-free; cover unused ends with caps. Use patch cords for flexibility rather than fusion splicing inside cabinets.

Document the installation, including cable routes, connector types, and test results. Following these steps ensures a reliable, low-loss connection for indoor dual-core flexible optical fiber cables, while allowing easy maintenance and future network upgrades.
