Albanian Tubular Busbar Structure

Albanian tubular busbars are hollow aluminium conductors designed for efficient high-current transmission with optimized mechanical strength and heat dissipation.

Overview

A tubular busbar is a hollow conductor, typically made from high-purity aluminium or aluminium alloys (e.g., 6061, 6063), used to transmit large currents in power systems, substations, and industrial installations. Unlike solid or flat busbars, the tubular design provides a high stiffness-to-weight ratio, improved heat dissipation, and reduced material usage while maintaining electrical performance. The hollow cross-section also mitigates the skin effect in AC systems, making it more efficient for high-frequency current flow.

Material and Design

Material: High-purity aluminium or aluminium alloys, offering lightweight, corrosion resistance, and cost efficiency. Shape: Hollow round tube, seamless or extruded, with typical diameters around 120 mm and wall thicknesses of 10 mm, depending on current requirements. Mechanical Strength: Tubular geometry ensures rigidity and durability, allowing spans without excessive sagging.

Horizontal spans are generally limited to 2. 5 meters and vertical spans to 1. 5 meters to prevent deformation.

Thermal Performance: Large surface area relative to cross-section enhances heat dissipation, keeping operating temperatures below 70°C under normal conditions.

Electrical Performance

Current Carrying Capacity: Determined by cross-sectional area; tubular design efficiently distributes AC current near the surface, reducing resistance and voltage drop. Skin Effect Mitigation: Hollow design aligns with current distribution, minimizing AC losses. Connection and Insulation: Special clamps, flat ends, or connection plates are used to ensure safe electrical connections.

Epoxy coatings or sleeves provide insulation and reduce arc flash risk.

Installation and Maintenance

Support Structures: Busbars are mounted on insulated pillars or brackets, with spacing designed to accommodate weight and thermal expansion. Torque and Fastening: Bolts (e.g., M12) should be tightened to standard torque (40–50 N·m) to ensure secure connections. Environmental Considerations: Avoid contact with acidic or alkaline substances; in harsh environments, inspections are recommended every 10–15 years.

Temperature Monitoring: Infrared checks are advised quarterly to ensure safe operation.

Standards and Specifications

Aluminium tubular busbars are manufactured according to national and international standards, such as ENA TS 41-11 for aluminium systems, and are suitable for substations up to 132 kV. Design considerations include short-circuit currents, wind loading, and mechanical forces, ensuring safe and reliable operation.

Advantages

Weight Reduction: Aluminium is roughly half the weight of copper for the same conductivity. Cost Efficiency: Lower material and installation costs compared to solid copper busbars. Enhanced Heat Dissipation: Hollow design reduces temperature rise during operation.

Durability: High mechanical strength and corrosion resistance extend service life. Albanian tubular busbar structures, therefore, combine mechanical robustness, electrical efficiency, and lightweight design, making them ideal for modern power distribution and substation applications.
