Standard distribution box cable connection diagram

A standard single-phase distribution box connects the main supply to an MCB, then to an RCCB, followed by individual output MCBs, with neutral and earth distributed via dedicated links.

Main Components and Connections

Incoming Supply

The phase (live) and neutral wires from the energy meter enter the distribution box. These wires are first connected to a double-pole MCB or main isolator, which acts as the main switch for the system.

RCC

B / RCD ProtectionThe output of the main MCB is connected to the RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker).

The RCC

B protects against earth leakage, electric shock, and insulation faults. Typical domestic installations use a 30mA rated RCCB.

Sub-

Circuit MCBsFrom the RCCB, the phase wire is distributed to individual single-pole MCBs for each sub-circuit (lighting, sockets, AC units, etc.). The neutral wire is connected to a neutral busbar, which distributes neutral to all sub-circuits.

Each MC

B protects its respective sub-circuit from overload and short circuits.

Neutral and Earth Links

All neutral wires from sub-circuits connect to the neutral link. All earth wires connect to the earth busbar, which is linked to the earth electrode or rod for proper grounding. Proper earthing ensures safety and prevents electric shock.

Cable Sizing and Color Codes

Phase wires are typically red or brown, neutral wires black or blue, and earth wires green/yellow. The main feeder cable should handle the total anticipated load (e.g., 16mm² for a 60A single-phase load),. Sub-circuit cables are sized according to their load (e.g., 1.

5mm² for lighting, 2. 5mm² for socket outlets).

Wiring Sequence Overview

Energy meter → Main MCB (DP)Main MCB → RCCB (DP)RCCB → Sub-circuit MCBs (SP)Sub-circuit MCBs → Final loads (lights, sockets, appliances)Neutral wires → Neutral busbar → Sub-circuitsEarth wires → Earth busbar → Sub-circuits → Earth electrode This arrangement ensures safe distribution of electricity, protection against overloads and leakage, and proper grounding for all connected devices. For visual guidance, detailed diagrams are available in tutorials and videos showing single-phase DB wiring with MCBs and RCCB for domestic installations.
