Optical Module Identification Methods

Optical modules can be identified through label inspection, pull tab color, internal encoding data, EEPROM reading, and chip model analysis. 1.

Label Inspection

Most optical modules come with labels that include manufacturer, production date, module type, transmission distance, and serial number. Checking these labels is the simplest method to identify a module. However, labels can be damaged or lost due to heat, humidity, or wear, making alternative methods necessary.

2.

Pull Tab Color and Text

Modules often have pull tabs with standardized colors or printed text. Different colors can indicate module types according to industry standards, while text markings may show the manufacturer or transmission rate. For example, Cisco modules often have the CISCO logo on the pull tab, and some 40G modules use specific colors to indicate their type.

3.

Internal Encoding Data

Optical modules store internal encoding data in memory areas that can be read using switches or dedicated code readers. This data provides detailed information such as module package type, power consumption, connector type, transmission rate, wavelength, manufacturer, and serial number. Reading and interpreting this data allows precise identification even when external labels are missing.

4.

EEPRO

M and Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM)Many standardized modules (SFP, QSFP, etc.) include EEPROM memory that stores manufacturer name, module model, supported data rate, and configuration parameters. Network equipment or specialized software can read this data. Additionally, Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) provides real-time monitoring of parameters like transmitted/received optical power, temperature, and voltage, which can help verify module identity and performance.

5.

Chip Model Identification

Inside optical modules, key chips such as laser chips, photodetector chips, driver chips, TIA chips, and DSP chips have model numbers printed on them. By inspecting these markings under a microscope or consulting datasheets, engineers can determine the chip type, supported data rate, and technology platform. This method is typically used in laboratory testing or failure analysis, as opening the module may damage it.

6.

Physical and Housing Features

While module housings vary between manufacturers, some core dimensions are standardized under Multi-Source Agreements (MSA). Differences in housing design, insertion depth, or connector type can provide additional clues for identification, though this method is less reliable than label or encoding data inspection.

Summary

To accurately identify optical modules, a combination of methods is recommended: Start with label and pull tab inspection. Use internal encoding data or EEPROM reading for precise identification. Verify with chip model numbers if detailed technical information is required.

Consider physical housing features as supplementary information. These methods ensure correct module identification, prevent compatibility issues, and support proper network maintenance and procurement.
