Fiber optic cable can supply power

Fiber optic cables cannot supply electrical power directly, but they can transmit optical power that can be converted into electricity using specialized devices. Fiber optic cables are primarily designed to transmit data using light signals, not electrical current. However, a technology called Power over Fiber (PoF) allows optical fibers to carry light energy, which can then be converted into electrical power at the receiving end using photovoltaic cells made from materials like gallium arsenide or indium phosphide.

This enables remote devices, such as sensors, cameras, or drones, to be powered without direct electrical connections, providing complete electrical isolation and immunity to electromagnetic interference.

How Power Over Fiber Works

A typical PoF system consists of three main components: Laser diode: Generates coherent light at specific wavelengths (commonly 750–980 nm for short distances). Optical fiber: Transmits the light over the desired distance. Multimode fibers with larger cores can carry higher optical power.

Photovoltaic receiver: Converts the transmitted light back into electrical power to operate the device. The efficiency of converting optical power to electrical power is generally 20–30%, though it can exceed 40% with optimized systems. The transmitted power is usually in the range of hundreds of milliwatts to a few watts, but higher powers are theoretically possible with larger fibers and photovoltaic receivers.

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages: Electrical isolation, making it safe in high-voltage or explosive environments. Immunity to electromagnetic interference. Lightweight and flexible cabling.

Limitations: Lower efficiency compared to conventional copper power transmission. Limited power capacity; standard telecom fibers typically handle up to about 1 Watt safely. Requires specialized equipment at both ends (laser source and photovoltaic converter).

Safety precautions are needed for high-power lasers, as broken fibers can emit hazardous infrared light. ApplicationsPoF is mainly used in industrial, military, and remote sensing applications, where electrical isolation, safety, or long-distance power delivery without heavy copper cables is critical. Examples include powering remote sensors, cameras, or small drones.

In summary, while fiber optic cables cannot directly supply electrical power, they can transmit optical energy that is converted into electricity at the destination, enabling specialized applications where conventional wiring is impractical or unsafe.
