Methods for setting relay protection values

Relay protection values are set using a combination of current, time, and impedance parameters, coordinated to ensure selective and reliable fault clearance.

Key Parameters in Relay Settings

Plug Setting Multiplier (PSM): Represents how many times the actual current exceeds the relay's pickup current. It is crucial for IDMT (Inverse Definite Minimum Time) relays to determine operating time.

Higher PS

M results in faster tripping, and settings should comply with IEC 60255-151 standards. Time Setting Multiplier (TSM): Scales the base operating time from the relay's characteristic curve.

Proper TS

M selection ensures coordination between upstream and downstream relays, with lower TSM values producing faster trips. Overload (OL) and Earth Leakage (EL) Settings: OL settings protect against thermal overloads, while EL settings detect earth faults. These are adjusted based on expected load currents and system grounding.

Multiplying Factor (MF): Used for metering or scaling purposes, ensuring the relay interprets current measurements correctly.

Distance and Impedance-

Based Settings

For transmission line protection, distance relays are configured using impedance characteristics: Zone 1: Typically set to 80–90% of the line impedance for instantaneous operation, including resistive and arc resistances. Zone 2: Covers the protected line plus a portion of the adjacent line, with a time delay coordinated to allow downstream relays to clear faults first. Zero Sequence Compensation: Applied to account for line-to-ground faults and changes in line impedance across sections.

Mho characteristics are preferred for phase faults due to high-speed operation, while quadrilateral characteristics are often used for phase-to-ground faults.

Transformer and Substation Relay Settings

For transformers and HV/MV substations, relay settings involve: Differential Protection: Setting pickup currents and percentage differential to detect internal faults.

IDM

T Overcurrent Protection: Using PSM and TSM to coordinate with upstream and downstream relays.

Earth Fault and RE

F Protection: Adjusted based on transformer neutral grounding and expected fault currents.

Over/

Under Voltage and Overflux Protection: Configured according to transformer ratings and operational limits.

Practical Steps for Setting Relays

Collect System Data: Line impedances, transformer ratings, load currents, and fault levels. Calculate Fault Currents: Symmetrical and asymmetrical fault analysis to determine maximum and minimum fault currents. Select Relay Characteristics: Choose IDMT, distance, or differential relay types based on application.

Determine Settings: Compute PSM, TSM, zone reaches, and time delays to ensure selectivity and coordination. Validate and Test: Simulate faults and verify relay operation under actual system conditions, adjusting settings as needed.

Coordination Principles

Downstream relays should operate faster than upstream relays to ensure selective tripping. Time grading is applied to prevent simultaneous tripping of multiple relays. Safety margins are included to account for breaker operating times and measurement uncertainties.

By following these methods, engineers can ensure that relay protection systems operate reliably, selectively, and in compliance with international standards.

Relay Settings Calculations

To avoid relay mal-operation, set Slope 2 as high as possible. Normally, a high Slope 2 setting causes slow tripping for evolving faults (external-to-internal faults).
