How many switches and how many circuits are in the distribution box

A typical distribution box contains one main switch and multiple circuit breakers, with the number of circuits depending on the number of MCBs or RCBOs installed.

Main Switch

Most distribution boxes have a single main switch, usually a double-pole switch, which isolates the entire electrical installation from the supply. This main switch does not protect against faults but provides safe disconnection for maintenance or emergencies. Its rating is typically 80A, 100A, or 125A for domestic use.

Circuit Breakers

The distribution box divides the incoming power into multiple individual circuits, each protected by its own Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) or Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent protection (RCBO). These devices serve as protective switches for lighting, power outlets, air conditioners, or other appliances.

Single-pole MC

Bs are commonly used for standard output circuits.

Double-pole MC

Bs may be used for high-power or special loads.

RCB

Os combine overcurrent and residual current protection for individual circuits, ensuring a fault in one circuit does not affect others.

Number of Circuits

The total number of circuits in a distribution box depends on the number of MCBs or RCBOs installed. For example, a 12-way DB box can accommodate 12 separate circuits, but it is recommended to plan for 20–30% spare capacity for future expansion. In commercial or industrial settings, distribution switchboards may have many more circuits, organized in functional modules for specific applications.

Summary

Main switch: 1 (double-pole for domestic use)Circuit breakers: Multiple, depending on the number of circuitsCircuits: Equal to the number of MCBs or RCBOs installed, typically 6–12 in domestic boxes, more in commercial or industrial installations This setup ensures safe distribution of electricity, protection against overloads, and isolation of individual circuits for maintenance or fault management.

This picture shows the interior of a typical distribution panel in the United Kingdom. The three incoming phase wires connect to the busbars via a main switch in the centre of the panel. On each side of the panel are two busbars, for neutral and earth. The incoming neutral connects to the lower busbar on the right side of the panel, which is in turn connected to the neutral busbar at the top left. The incoming earth wire conne
