The distribution box is installed inside the partition wall

A distribution box can be safely installed in a partition wall if it is embedded correctly, firmly fixed, and complies with electrical safety standards.

Placement and Preparation

When installing a distribution box in a partition wall, the wall should have a reserved hole approximately 20 mm larger than the box dimensions, with a depth equal to the box thickness plus the plaster layer on the inner wall. The box should be positioned in a dry, accessible area with good ventilation, typically at a height of around 1. 5 meters from the floor for general distribution boxes.

Ensure the location avoids fire-rated partitions, bathrooms, clothes closets, or above stair steps, in compliance with NEC and local codes.

Fixing and Alignment

The box must be installed firmly, horizontally, and vertically, with a vertical deviation not exceeding 3 mm. When embedded in masonry, it can be secured by filling concrete between the box and the wall. The edges of the box should be flush with the wall, and contact surfaces coated with anti-corrosion paint to prevent deterioration.

Wiring and Safety

Mechanical protection: Cables entering the box should be protected against penetration by nails or screws, either by using earthed conduits, trunking, or steel plates of at least 3 mm thickness. Connections: Power lines should be connected securely to terminals, with multi-strand wires properly crimped and tinned to prevent loose connections. Busbars: Neutral (N) and protective earth (PE) lines should be separated and clearly labeled on busbars without splicing.

Fuse installation: Porcelain plug-in fuses should be installed vertically, and connections made to prevent electric shock during loading or unloading.

Compliance and Inspection

Ensure the distribution box and its components meet relevant standards (UL, CE, CCC, or local certifications) and that the enclosure material is non-combustible or flame-retardant if wooden boxes are used. After installation, perform visual inspections and electrical tests to verify proper connections, mechanical stability, and compliance with safety regulations.

Summary

Installing a distribution box in a partition wall is feasible and safe if the box is embedded correctly, mechanically protected, properly wired, and compliant with standards. Proper height, alignment, and labeling, along with secure connections and protective measures, ensure long-term reliability and safety of the electrical system.
