Configuration diagram of Level 1 distribution box

A Level 1 distribution box typically includes a main MCB, RCCB, individual output MCBs, neutral and earth links, arranged in a structured layout for safe and efficient power distribution.

Core Components

Main MC

B (Double Pole): Acts as the main switch, receiving the incoming phase and neutral supply. It protects the entire distribution box from overloads and short circuits ( ).

RCC

B (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against leakage currents, insulation failures, and electric shocks.

The RCC

B is connected downstream of the main MCB, with its output feeding the individual MCBs ( ).

Output MC

Bs (Single or Double Pole): Distribute power to individual circuits or loads.

Single-pole MC

Bs are commonly used for standard loads, while double-pole MCBs may be used for special or high-power loads ( ). Neutral Link: Distributes the neutral connection to all output circuits. Each load's neutral wire is connected here ( ).

Earth Link: Provides grounding for all circuits and the distribution box itself, ensuring safety ( ). Busbars: Copper or aluminum bars that connect the main MCB to the RCCB and output MCBs, ensuring efficient current flow ( ). Layout PrinciplesTop-to-Bottom Arrangement: The main MCB is usually placed at the top, followed by the RCCB, and then the output MCBs below.

This ensures a logical flow of power and simplifies maintenance ( ). Separation Forms: IEC 61439 recommends physical separation of live parts, neutral, and earth to prevent accidental contact and simplify servicing. Form 2 or Form 4 separation is commonly applied in Level 1 boxes ( ).

Labeling and Accessibility: Each MCB and circuit should be clearly labeled. The box should be installed at an accessible height (~1. 5m) with proper ventilation and dry conditions ( ).

Wiring Practices: Use correct wire gauge, proper insulation, and neat cable management. Ensure secure grounding and compliance with local electrical codes ( ).

Typical Wiring Flow

Incoming Supply → Main MCBMain MCB Output → RCCB InputRCCB Output → Output MCBsOutput MCBs → Individual circuitsNeutral and Earth → Connected to respective links for all circuits This configuration ensures safe, modular, and code-compliant distribution of electricity in residential or small commercial installations, while allowing easy maintenance and future upgrades ( ).
