Reasons for the bending of fiber Bragg grating sensors

Fiber Bragg grating sensors bend primarily due to applied mechanical strain, curvature of the fiber, or external forces that alter the fiber's physical length and refractive index, causing shifts in the Bragg wavelength.

Physical Mechanisms of Bending

Fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are periodic variations in the refractive index along the core of an optical fiber. When the fiber is bent, two main effects occur: Strain-Induced Changes: Bending introduces tensile or compressive strain along the fiber. The side of the fiber under tension stretches, increasing the spacing between grating planes, while the compressed side shortens.

This strain alters the Bragg wavelength, which is the specific wavelength reflected by the grating, allowing the sensor to detect bending magnitude and direction. Refractive Index Variation: Bending also affects the effective refractive index of the fiber core. The curvature modifies the optical path length, which changes the reflected wavelength.

Both the physical elongation and the strain-dependent refractive index contribute to the measurable wavelength shift.

Environmental and Structural Factors

External Forces: Loads applied to structures where FBGs are embedded, such as bridges or beams, can induce bending in the fiber. The sensor responds to these deformations by shifting the Bragg wavelength. Mounting and Packaging: The way the FBG is attached to a surface or embedded in a composite material can influence bending.

Uneven bonding or pre-stressed installation can create localized curvature.

Temperature-

Strain Interaction: Temperature changes can exacerbate bending effects by causing thermal expansion or contraction of the fiber and surrounding material, which adds to the mechanical strain.

Measurement Implications

Bending in FBG sensors is not only a source of strain but can also be exploited for sensing applications, such as curvature or tilt measurement. By analyzing the Bragg wavelength shift, the sensor can quantify the bending radius and direction, making FBGs versatile for structural health monitoring and robotics. In summary, FBG sensor bending occurs due to mechanical strain, curvature-induced refractive index changes, external forces, and environmental factors, all of which influence the reflected Bragg wavelength and enable precise detection of bending in various applications.
