Laser Diode Positive and Negative

A typical laser diode has a common positive terminal (+), a laser diode cathode (LDC) connected to negative, and a photodiode anode (PDA) also connected to negative for feedback.

Terminal Configuration

Most laser diodes have three terminals: Common (+): Connected to the positive supply voltage. This is the shared terminal for both the laser diode and the photodiode. Laser Diode Cathode (LDC): Connected to the negative side of the power supply, allowing the laser diode to be forward biased and emit coherent light.

Photodiode Anode (PDA): Also connected to the negative side, keeping the photodiode reverse biased to monitor the laser output for feedback control. In some laser diodes, especially 4-pin types, the photodiode may have a separate connection, but the principle remains the same: the laser diode is forward biased, and the photodiode is reverse biased to provide current proportional to the emitted light.

How It Works

When the forward voltage is applied across the PN junction of the laser diode: Electrons in the conduction band recombine with holes in the valence band. This recombination releases energy as photons, producing a coherent, monochromatic, and directional laser beam. The photodiode detects a fraction of the emitted light traveling backward and generates a current used to regulate the laser diode's output via a driver circuit.

Identifying Polarity Safely

Datasheet: The safest method to determine positive and negative terminals is to consult the laser diode's datasheet. Test Circuit: If the datasheet is unavailable, a low-current test circuit can be used: a voltage source, a current-limiting resistor, and the diode. Measure the voltage drop; the forward-biased direction shows the diode's forward voltage, while the reverse-biased direction blocks current.

Precautions: Laser diodes are extremely sensitive to overcurrent and electrostatic discharge. Even a standard multimeter diode test can damage them. Always limit current and avoid direct eye exposure to the laser beam.

Summary

Positive terminal: Common (+)Negative terminals: LDC (laser diode cathode) and PDA (photodiode anode)Forward bias: Laser diode emits lightReverse bias: Photodiode monitors output for feedback Correctly connecting the terminals ensures safe operation and stable laser output, especially in precision applications like optical communication or measurement systems.
