Laying Process of Communication Optical Cable

The optical cable laying process involves careful planning, route preparation, cable deployment, splicing, testing, and maintenance to ensure high-speed, reliable communication.

Planning and Site Survey

Before installation, a detailed site survey is conducted to map the route, assess terrain, identify existing utilities, and determine potential obstacles such as buildings, waterways, or roads. A fiber construction plan is developed, specifying whether the installation will be aerial, underground, or submarine, and identifying central distribution points for network architecture. Necessary permits and approvals from local authorities or private property owners are obtained to ensure compliance with regulations and safety standards.

Preparing the Worksite

The worksite is prepared by marking existing underground utilities using colored flags or paint to prevent accidental damage during excavation. For underground installations, trenches or conduits are prepared, sometimes using micro-trenching or horizontal directional drilling (HDD) to minimize disruption. Protective layers such as PVC pipes or innerducts are installed to safeguard the fiber cables.

Cable Laying Techniques

Fiber optic cables are deployed using pulling or blowing methods: Cable Pulling: The cable is pulled through conduits using grips and lubricants to reduce tension and prevent damage. Cable Blowing: Compressed air propels the cable through ducts, reducing stress on fibers and allowing longer distances to be covered efficiently. For aerial installations, cables are attached to utility poles using clamps and tensioners, ensuring proper spacing and tension to withstand environmental conditions.

Submarine cables require specialized ships and plows to lay cables on the seabed, often with protective armor for deep-water durability.

Splicing and Termination

Since fiber cables are not continuous, splicing is performed to join sections. This can be done via fusion splicing or mechanical splicing, ensuring minimal signal loss. Termination connects the fiber to network equipment or access points, often using protective splice closures to prevent moisture ingress.

Backfilling and Protection

For underground cables, trenches are backfilled with soil, sand, or gravel to protect the cable from sharp objects and soil movement. Warning tapes are placed above the cable to alert future diggers. Conduits may include conductive marker tape for easier future location.

Testing and Documentation

After installation, the network is tested using Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDR) or Optical Loss Test Sets (OLTS) to verify signal integrity, detect bends, splices, or contamination, and ensure compliance with standards. Detailed documentation of the cable route, depth, and splicing locations is maintained for future maintenance and troubleshooting.

Maintenance and Supervision

Regular inspections, cleaning, and monitoring are essential to maintain optimal performance. Supervisors ensure that cables are handled properly during installation and that all safety and environmental measures are followed. Any physical damage or signal degradation is addressed promptly to prevent network downtime.

Summary

The communication optical cable laying process is a multi-step procedure requiring careful planning, precise installation, and rigorous testing. By following best practices, including proper route planning, cable handling, splicing, and testing, fiber optic networks can deliver high-speed, reliable, and long-lasting communication infrastructure.
