Laser diodes are divided into PdLDs

PdLDs are pulsed diode laser devices, a type of laser diode designed to emit high-power optical pulses for short durations.

Overview of Laser Diodes

A laser diode (LD) is a semiconductor device that emits coherent light when electrons recombine with holes at a p-n junction, producing photons of a specific wavelength determined by the semiconductor material. Laser diodes are widely used in fiber-optic communications, barcode scanners, laser pointers, and optical storage devices. They can operate in continuous-wave (CW) mode or pulsed mode, depending on the application.

Pulsed Diode Laser Devices (PdLDs)PdLDs, also referred to as pulsed laser diodes (PLDs), are designed to emit light in short, high-intensity pulses rather than continuously. Key characteristics include: Current-controlled operation: Electrons injected into the diode produce photons in direct proportion to the current applied. The device operates well above the lasing threshold, making the threshold negligible in system design.

High peak power: Modern quantum well PLDs can achieve optical power efficiencies of about 1 W/A for single-junction emitters and up to 3. 2 W/A for triple-junction devices. Short pulse generation: The design of the drive electronics is critical, as parasitic inductance and component resistance affect the rise time and peak current of pulses.

Thermal management: Due to high current densities, PdLDs require careful heat dissipation to prevent thermal runaway and maintain stable operation. ApplicationsPdLDs are commonly used in: LiDAR and time-of-flight (ToF) systems for distance measurement and 3D mapping. Optical communication systems where high-speed pulsed signals are required.

Scientific instrumentation requiring precise, short-duration light pulses.

Summary

In essence, PdLDs are a specialized type of laser diode optimized for pulsed operation, offering high peak optical power and precise timing control. They differ from continuous-wave laser diodes in that they are designed to handle high currents for very short durations, making them suitable for applications like LiDAR, pulsed optical communication, and high-speed sensing.
