Proper cabling from the cabinet head unit to the PDU ensures safe, organized, and efficient power distribution for all rack-mounted devices.

Preparation and Planning

Before starting, evaluate your power requirements by listing all devices in the cabinet and their power consumption to prevent overloading the PDU. Measure the cabinet dimensions to confirm the PDU fits properly and determine whether it will be mounted vertically (0U) or horizontally (1U). Select a PDU compatible with your power source, considering amperage, voltage, plug type (NEMA or IEC), and number of outlets.

Gather tools such as screwdrivers, cable strippers, insulated gloves, a voltage tester, and mounting brackets.

Cable Routing

Install wire bushings at the cabinet's cable outlets to protect cables and simplify routing. Cut a cross in the bushing to allow cables to pass through without damage. Route cables along the side panels or mounting bars of the cabinet, securing them with cable ties, Velcro straps, or cable management panels to prevent tangling and maintain airflow.

Group cables by function (power vs. data) for easier maintenance. Connecting to the PDUTurn off the power supply and verify with a voltage tester to ensure safety. Remove any protective panels on the PDU if present.

Connect the input power cables from the cabinet head unit to the PDU terminals, following the silk-screened labels on the PDU ports.

Always follow UL limits for cable length and avoid overloading circuits. Wear insulated gloves and safety goggles when handling live or potentially live connections.

Testing and Verification

After installation, verify the PDU's functionality by checking voltage at input terminals with a multimeter and ensuring all connected devices receive power.
