Selection Guide for Mining-Grade CFP OSFP

Choosing the right mining-grade CFP or OSFP module depends on speed requirements, thermal architecture, port density, and upgrade plans for 400G/800G networks.

Understanding OSFP and CF

P Form FactorsOSFP (Octal Small Form-factor Pluggable) modules feature 8 electrical lanes, each capable of 100Gbps using PAM4 modulation, delivering 800Gbps aggregate bandwidth. The OSFP-XD variant doubles the lane count to 16, supporting up to 3. 2Tbps, but is not cross-compatible with standard OSFP ports due to mechanical and electrical differences.

CF

P modules, including CFP2 and CFP8, are larger and typically used for high-speed backbone or mining-grade deployments, offering flexibility in distance and optical interfaces.

Key Selection Criteria

Speed and Upgrade PathFor current 25G/100G access, SFP28 and QSFP28 are standard. For future-proofing 400G/800G deployments, QSFP-DD or OSFP should be considered early to avoid re-cabling and re-qualification. OSFP-XD is ideal for ultra-high-density or AI/HPC clusters requiring 1.

6T+ aggregate bandwidth. Thermal ArchitectureOSFP-IHS (Integrated Heat Sink): Heat sink is built into the module, optimized for airflow in high-density racks. OSFP-RHS (Riding Heat Sink): Requires a separate heatsink, offering flexibility for custom cooling solutions but may increase installation complexity.

Thermal choice impacts rack airflow, power budget, and module longevity. Port Density and Mechanical FitOSFP modules have a larger footprint than QSFP-DD, reducing ports per 1U but improving thermal performance.

CF

P modules are physically larger, suitable for long-reach or high-power applications, but may limit front-panel density.

Compatibility and Interoperability

Ensure switch ports, firmware, and breakout configurations match the selected module.

OSF

P and OSFP-XD are not interchangeable, so plan deployment according to lane count and speed requirements. QSFP-DD is backward compatible with QSFP standards, offering smoother migration in mixed environments.

Deployment Considerations

Validate cable plant, fiber type, and connector type. Consider DAC/AOC breakout options for flexible connectivity. Align module choice with AI, HPC, or mining workloads to optimize performance and minimize thermal bottlenecks.

Practical Recommendation

Use SFP28 for new access links (25G), QSFP28 for 100G aggregation, and QSFP-DD/OSFP for 400G/800G spine or AI cluster deployments.

Choose IH

S modules for standard high-density racks with sufficient airflow.

Opt for RH

S modules if custom cooling or higher flexibility is required. Plan for future upgrades by selecting modules compatible with your intended speed and lane architecture. By carefully evaluating speed, thermal design, port density, and compatibility, you can select the optimal mining-grade CFP or OSFP module that ensures high performance, reliability, and scalability for your data center or AI infrastructure.
