Installing the DML hybrid optical electrical cable

DML hybrid cables combine optical fibers and metallic conductors, allowing simultaneous data and power transmission, and require careful handling, proper routing, and adherence to technical standards during installation.

Understanding the Cable

A DM

L hybrid cable integrates optical fibers for data and copper conductors for power, typically under a shared sheath. This design allows a single cable to support both communication and power delivery, reducing cabling density and simplifying infrastructure deployment. The cable may include shielding, armored jackets, or waterproof layers to protect against mechanical stress and environmental hazards.

Preparation and Safety

Qualified personnel only: Installation should be performed by trained technicians with access to proper communication facilities. Power off: Ensure no power is connected during cable preparation or splicing. Avoid damage: Do not stretch, step on, or place heavy objects on the cable.

Keep it away from sharp edges. Tools: Use appropriate tools for stripping the outer sheath, cutting fibers, trimming Kevlar, and cleaning optical fibers.

Routing and Handling

Bending radius: Maintain a minimum bending radius of five times the cable diameter; for branch optical fibers, at least 15 mm. Coiling excess fiber: Coil any excess optical fiber around a dedicated device, such as a fiber management tray, applying even force to prevent over-bending. Bundling: When not using a conduit, bundle a maximum of 100 hybrid cables; if using a pipe, leave at least one-third of the space vacant.

Connectorization and SplicingOptical-electrical separation: Insert optical fibers into the corresponding optical port and copper wires into the appropriate connector, such as a Phoenix connector. Dust protection: Cover vacant hybrid connectors with dustproof caps and ensure end faces are clean. Testing: Use a red pointer or optical fiber adapter to check for broken fibers after assembly.

Compliance and Standards

Follow ITU-T L. 109 for construction and installation guidance, which provides recommendations for hybrid optical/metallic cables, including environmental considerations and test methods. Ensure that the cable type and installation method meet local regulations and the specific requirements of your deployment environment.

Environmental Considerations

Indoor vs. outdoor: Choose armored or waterproof variants for harsh environments. Temperature and mechanical stress: Ensure the cable can withstand tensile and compressive forces during installation and operation. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a reliable, safe, and efficient installation of DML hybrid optical/electrical cables, supporting both data and power transmission in a single infrastructure.
