Cable bridge in Kuwait

The Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway features a landmark asymmetric cable-stayed bridge connecting Kuwait City with Subiyah, spanning the Bay of Kuwait.

Overview

The Sheikh Jaber Al-

Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway is a major infrastructure project in Kuwait, completed in 2019, that spans approximately 48. 5 kilometers across Kuwait Bay, making it one of the longest road bridges in the world. It consists of two main links: the Main Link, connecting Kuwait City to northern areas including Subiyah and Bubiyan Island, and the Doha Link, connecting Kuwait City to the Doha district.

Cable-

Stayed Bridge Features

The highlight of the causeway is the Main Bridge, an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge designed to resemble Kuwait's traditional sailboat, symbolizing the nation's heritage. Unlike typical symmetric cable-stayed bridges, the cables in this design are connected to specific parts of the deck, which is rare in large-scale bridge construction. The main span measures 340 meters, and the bridge is engineered to withstand extreme desert heat, strong winds, and the corrosive effects of seawater.

Technical and Structural Details

The bridge accommodates six lanes of traffic (eight including emergency lanes) with a total width of 30. 6 meters. The Main Link features twin pre-stressed concrete box girders for most spans, with lengths of 40 m and 60 m, while the cable-stayed section forms the central landmark.

Construction involved the creation of two artificial islands (Bay Island North and Bay Island South), each covering around 330,000 m², to support the bridge structure. Advanced engineering techniques, including precasting of prestressed spans and the use of specialized tower cranes, were employed to ensure stability and precision during construction.

Significance

The causeway significantly reduces travel time between Kuwait City and northern regions from 90 minutes to under 30 minutes, supporting Kuwait Vision 2035 and the development of Silk City. It also alleviates traffic congestion, integrates northern areas with central Kuwait, and serves as a strategic transport route for economic and urban development.

Conclusion

The Sheikh Jaber Al-

Ahmad Al-Sabah Causeway's asymmetric cable-stayed bridge is not only a functional transport link but also an iconic architectural landmark in Kuwait, combining engineering innovation with cultural symbolism. It represents one of the most ambitious and technically challenging infrastructure projects in the Middle East.
