There are several ways to connect mobile communication optical cables

Mobile communication optical cables can be attached using wrapping, lashing, or clipping methods, often along existing overhead conductors, with specialized equipment ensuring secure and safe installation. Optical Attached Cable (OPAC) OverviewOptical attached cables (OPAC) are all-dielectric fiber optic cables designed to be installed along existing overhead conductors, such as phase wires, ground wires, or optical ground wires, without major infrastructure modifications. They are lightweight, compact, and typically use loose-tube singlemode fibers to resist electromagnetic interference and support long-distance communication.

C is widely used for integrating telecommunications into electrical grids and mobile networks.

Attachment Methods

Wrapped Cable Systems

The cable is spirally wrapped around the host conductor using a specialized wrapping machine that moves along the span from pole to pole or tower to tower. For low or medium voltage lines, the wrapping machine can sometimes be pulled by hand from the ground, while high-voltage lines require radio-controlled or motorized units powered by batteries or petrol engines. This method was first developed in the UK (SkyWrap) and Japan (GWWOP) in the 1980s and remains the most common approach.

Lashed Cable Systems

Involves attaching the fiber optic cable to a messenger wire using lashing wire or tape. The cable is secured along the length of the support conductor, providing stability and protection against wind and vibration.

Clipped Cable Systems

Uses specialized clips or clamps to fasten the cable directly to the host conductor. This method is less common but can be used for shorter spans or where wrapping is impractical.

Installation Considerations

Equipment: Wrapping machines, lashing tools, or clipping devices are required, and systems from different manufacturers are generally not interchangeable. Cable Protection: Jackets are designed to resist abrasion, extreme temperatures, weather, and ice buildup. Coronal discharge prevention devices may be needed near high-voltage towers.

Tension and Bend Radius: Extra fiber length is provided to accommodate wrapping tension, and minimum bend radius constraints must be observed to prevent signal loss or fiber damage. Safety: Installations on live lines require adherence to electrical safety standards and proper personal protective equipment. Maintenance: Ground-level splicing and multiple cables on a single conductor facilitate easier maintenance and network expansion.

General Fiber Optic Installation Practices

Preparation: Inspect cables for damage, clean connectors, and ensure a dust-free environment. Tools: Cleavers, fusion splicers, and connector kits are essential for joining fibers and attaching connectors. Standards Compliance: Follow FOA, ANSI/TIA/EIA, or manufacturer-specific guidelines to ensure reliable performance.

Load Management: For vertical installations, clamp cables at intervals to prevent excessive tension and movement. By selecting the appropriate attachment method and following proper installation practices, mobile communication optical cables can be securely deployed along existing infrastructure, ensuring high performance and long-term reliability.
