Transmission distance of multi-film optical modules

Multimode optical modules typically support short-range transmission, with distances ranging from 100 meters to 550 meters depending on data rate and fiber type.

Typical Transmission Distances

Multimode optical modules, often referred to as short-reach (SR) modules, are designed for short-distance communication within data centers or equipment rooms. Their effective transmission distance depends on the data rate and the fiber type: 100 Mbps: up to 2 km on multimode fiber (MMF) at 850 nm wavelength. 1 Gbps: typically up to 550 meters on OM3 MMF.

10 Gbps: around 300 meters on OM3 MMF. 40 Gbps: approximately 400 meters on OM4 MMF. Higher rates (25G/100G/200G/400G): distances reduce to 100 meters or less due to modal dispersion.

Factors Affecting Transmission Distance

Wavelength: Multimode modules usually operate at 850 nm, which experiences higher attenuation than longer wavelengths like 1310 nm or 1550 nm used in single-mode modules. Fiber Type: OM3, OM4, and OM5 fibers have different modal bandwidths, affecting maximum reach. OM4 and OM5 fibers support longer distances at higher data rates.

Modal Dispersion: In multimode fibers, multiple light paths cause pulse spreading, which limits distance as data rates increase. Connector and Splice Losses: Each connector, splice, or bend introduces signal loss, reducing effective transmission distance. Optical Power: The transmitter's output power and receiver sensitivity also determine the achievable distance.

Comparison with Single-Mode ModulesSingle-mode optical modules are designed for long-range transmission, typically 10 km, 40 km, or more, using 1310 nm or 1550 nm wavelengths over single-mode fiber (SMF). They experience lower attenuation and minimal dispersion, allowing signals to travel much farther than multimode modules.

Summary

Multimode optical modules are ideal for short-range, high-density environments such as LANs and intra-data center links. Their transmission distance is generally 100 meters to 550 meters, depending on fiber type and data rate, with higher speeds reducing the maximum reach. Proper selection of fiber type, wavelength, and module specifications is essential to maintain signal integrity and network performance.
