Connect the two ends of the cable to the multimode optical module

To connect a multimode optical module, use MPO patch cords with correct polarity and adapters, ensuring Tx and Rx ports are properly aligned.

Step-by-

Step Connection

Identify the Optical Module Ports Each multimode optical module has Tx (transmit) and Rx (receive) ports. Ensure you know which port is which before connecting the fiber to avoid signal misalignment.

Select the Correct MP

O Patch Cord Multimode MP

O patch cords come in Type A, Type B, and Type C configurations: Type A (Key up–Key down): Straight-through, fibers maintain the same positions at both ends. Type B (Key up–Key up): Full-cross, fibers are reversed at the ends. Type C (Key up–Key down): Pair-wise cross, adjacent fiber pairs are reversed.

Use MP

O Adapters if Needed MPO adapters connect two MPO patch cords and are available in Type A (key up–key down) and Type B (key up–key up). They help maintain proper polarity when linking modules to backbone cables.

Connect the Cable

Remove dust caps from the optical module and MPO connectors. Insert one end of the MPO patch cord into the module's port, ensuring the key orientation matches the module's interface. If using an MPO adapter, connect the patch cord to the adapter, then link to the backbone cable.

Connect the other end of the MPO patch cord to the peer module, again verifying Tx and Rx alignment. Verify Polarity and Performance Proper polarity ensures that the Tx of one module connects to the Rx of the other. Using Type A and Type B patch cords with the correct adapter configuration maintains this alignment for parallel transmission modules like 40G-SR4 or 100G-SR4.

Additional Best Practices

Avoid bending or tightly bundling fibers to prevent signal loss. Label both ends of the fiber for identification. Match the end-face type (UPC or APC) of the MPO connectors to the module interface.

Use mode-conditioning patch cables if connecting single-mode lasers to multimode fibers to reduce differential mode delay. By following these steps, you can ensure a reliable, low-loss connection between multimode optical modules using MPO cables and adapters.
