French Single-Fiber Bidirectional Optical Module

Single-fiber bidirectional (BiDi) optical modules enable simultaneous transmit and receive over a single fiber using two wavelengths, reducing fiber usage by 50% while maintaining high-speed connectivity.

How Bi

Di Optical Modules WorkBiDi optical modules operate on the principle of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM), allowing full-duplex communication over a single fiber strand. Each end of the fiber uses a different wavelength for transmission and reception—for example, one end transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm, while the other end does the opposite—ensuring interference-free bidirectional data flow. Inside the module, a WDM coupler multiplexes the two wavelengths onto the same fiber and demultiplexes them at the receiving end, effectively doubling the fiber's data capacity without additional cabling.

Key FeaturesSingle-Fiber Operation: Reduces fiber usage by over 50%, which is particularly valuable in fiber-constrained environments.

Full-

Duplex Communication: Simultaneous transmit and receive on one fiber strand. Wavelength Isolation: Integrated filters prevent crosstalk between transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) wavelengths, maintaining signal integrity. Form Factor: Typically available in SFP or SFP+ modules, compatible with standard MSA interfaces for easy deployment.

Distance and Speed: Modules support various ranges (10 km to 80 km) and speeds (1G, 10G, or higher), depending on wavelength configuration and fiber type. Monitoring: Many modules include Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) for real-time tracking of temperature, voltage, and optical power. ApplicationsBiDi modules are widely used in: Data Center Interconnects (DCI): Reducing fiber cabling and simplifying network upgrades.

Metro and Campus Networks: Efficiently connecting multiple sites with limited fiber availability.

FTT

H (Fiber to the Home): Cost-effective deployment in residential or enterprise fiber networks.

Long-

Haul Links: Certain BiDi SFP+ modules support distances up to 40 km or more with high reliability.

Advantages

Cost Savings: Fewer fibers and reduced installation costs. Simplified Cabling: Less physical infrastructure to manage, reducing potential failure points. Scalability: Easy to upgrade network capacity without laying new fiber.

High Performance: Maintains data integrity and throughput comparable to dual-fiber solutions. In summary, French Single-Fiber BiDi optical modules provide a compact, efficient, and cost-effective solution for modern optical networks, leveraging WDM technology to maximize fiber utilization while supporting high-speed, full-duplex communication.
