Principle of Box-Type Optical Splitter Manufacturing

Box-type optical splitters distribute a single optical signal into multiple outputs using either fused fiber or planar waveguide technology, housed in a protective enclosure for network deployment.

Overview

A box-type optical splitter is a passive optical device that divides an incoming light signal into multiple outputs without requiring electrical power, making it ideal for Passive Optical Networks (PONs) and Fiber To The Home (FTTH) systems. The splitter is enclosed in a protective box to ensure durability, environmental resistance, and ease of installation in outdoor or indoor network cabinets.

Working Principle

The core principle of a box-type splitter is optical signal redistribution: Signal Input: Light enters the splitter through a single input fiber connected to the main network line. Signal Division: Inside the splitter, the light is divided into multiple outputs using one of two main technologies: Fused Biconical Taper (FBT): Two or more fibers are heated and stretched until they fuse together. The tapered region allows light to couple between fibers, splitting the signal into the desired ratio (e.g., 1: 2, 1: 4).

FB

T is cost-effective and suitable for small-scale or low-split applications. Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC): Uses photolithography to create silica waveguides on a semiconductor substrate. Light is guided through these waveguides and split evenly across multiple outputs (e.g., 1: 32, 1: 64).

PL

C splitters provide high uniformity, low loss, and scalability for large networks. Signal Output: The divided optical signals exit through multiple output fibers, each delivering a portion of the original signal to end users or network nodes. Manufacturing PrinciplesFBT Splitters: Fibers are precisely aligned, heated, and tapered to achieve the desired coupling ratio.

The process requires careful control of temperature, tension, and taper length to minimize insertion loss and ensure consistent splitting.

PL

C Splitters: Waveguides are fabricated using lithography on a silica substrate. The design of the waveguide network determines the split ratio and ensures uniform power distribution. The substrate is then packaged into a protective box with input/output fiber pigtails.

Box Packaging: The enclosure protects the splitter from moisture, dust, and mechanical stress. It also provides strain relief for fibers and allows easy integration into optical distribution frames or cabinets. ApplicationsBox-type splitters are widely used in FTTH networks, data centers, and telecom distribution networks.

They can be deployed in centralized splitting (one splitter serving multiple users from a central location) or cascaded splitting (multiple splitters in series to extend coverage). Common split ratios include 1: 2, 1: 4, 1: 8, 1: 16, 1: 32, and 1: 64, depending on network requirements.

Key Advantages

Passive operation (no power required)Uniform and controlled signal distributionScalable for large networksProtected in a durable enclosure for outdoor or indoor use In summary, the principle of box-type optical splitter manufacturing combines precise optical coupling (FBT or PLC) with robust packaging to deliver reliable, multi-output signal distribution for modern fiber optic networks.
