Function of the side fiber optic sensor

A side fiber optic sensor detects objects or environmental changes by sensing light reflected or interrupted at the side of the fiber, enabling precise, non-contact detection in narrow or hard-to-reach locations.

How Side Fiber Optic Sensors Work

Side fiber optic sensors operate by transmitting light from a fiber optic cable to a target and detecting the light that is reflected back or interrupted. The sensor typically consists of a fiber amplifier unit and a fiber unit, where the fiber unit is flexible and can be positioned in tight or side-mounted locations. When an object enters the sensing area, it either blocks or reflects the light, causing a change in the optical signal that the amplifier detects and converts into an electronic output.

Key Functions

Object Detection in Narrow Spaces: The side fiber optic sensor can detect objects in confined or hard-to-access areas where traditional sensors cannot fit.

Non-

Contact Sensing: It measures the presence, position, or movement of objects without physical contact, reducing wear and preventing damage to both the sensor and the object. Environmental Monitoring: Side sensors can detect changes in temperature, pressure, or strain when integrated with intrinsic fiber optic sensing principles, where the fiber itself acts as the sensing element.

High-

Speed Response: Light travels at high speed, allowing the sensor to respond almost instantaneously to changes in the environment.

Advantages of Side-

Mounted Fiber Optic Sensors

Flexibility in Installation: The fiber cable can be routed around corners or along surfaces, making side mounting practical in complex machinery. Immunity to Electromagnetic Interference: Since the sensor uses light instead of electricity, it can operate safely in high-voltage or flammable environments. Versatility: Capable of detecting a wide range of materials, including metal, plastic, glass, wood, and liquids.

Applications

Side fiber optic sensors are widely used in industrial automation, safety systems, robotics, and precision manufacturing, where detecting objects in tight spaces or monitoring environmental parameters is critical. They are also employed in structural health monitoring and remote sensing applications, leveraging the fiber's ability to transmit signals over long distances without electrical interference. In summary, the side fiber optic sensor functions as a precise, flexible, and non-contact detection device, ideal for monitoring objects or environmental changes in locations where conventional sensors are impractical.

Fiber-optic sensor

Optical fibers can be used as sensors to measure strain, temperature, pressure and other quantities by modifying a fiber so that the quantity to be measured modulates the intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength or transit time of light in the fiber. Sensors that vary the intensity of light are the simplest, since only a simple source and detector are required. A particularly useful feature of intrinsic fiber-optic sensors is that they can, if required, provide distributed sensing over very large distances.
