OPGW Fiber Optic Splice Box Installation

Installing an OPGW fiber optic splice box involves careful cable preparation, precise fusion splicing, secure closure installation, and thorough testing to ensure both optical and grounding performance.

Preparation and Safety

Before starting, establish site safety by creating an equal potential zone using temporary ground cables and protective equipment such as removable hot-sticks and conductive mats to prevent electrical hazards during work on high-voltage transmission lines. Ensure all personnel are trained and aware of safety protocols.

Cable Preparation

Straighten and mark the cable over a length of approximately 2–2. 5 meters to prepare for stripping. Remove the armor and metallic layers carefully to access the optical fibers without damaging them.

Use clamps or suitable tools to stabilize the cable during this process. Place a heat-shrink tube over the cable before splicing to facilitate sealing later.

Fiber Splicing

Access the fibers and clean them thoroughly. Perform fusion splicing using a fusion splicer, ensuring precise alignment of fiber cores for minimal signal loss. Seal the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve to protect against moisture and mechanical stress.

Splice Box Installation

Select a suitable splice enclosure, such as AFL's SB01, which provides protection from environmental elements and mechanical damage, and can accommodate up to 144 fibers with internal buffer tube storage. Pre-mount the enclosure to the structure if possible, before completing the splicing phase. Route the fibers into the splice tray, ensuring proper management and avoiding sharp bends.

Secure the fibers in the tray for organized storage. Seal the enclosure and ensure all cable ports are properly plugged to maintain IP67 protection against water and dust.

Testing and Verification

After installation, perform OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) testing to verify splice quality and signal integrity. Record the backscattering curve and attenuation values for documentation and future reference.

Key Considerations

Handle fibers and metallic layers with care to avoid damage. Ensure the splice box is mechanically secure and weatherproof. Maintain proper bend radius and fiber organization inside the tray.

Follow manufacturer guidelines for specific splice enclosures and accessories. By following these steps, you can achieve a reliable OPGW splice installation that maintains both optical communication and grounding functions, ensuring long-term network performance and safety.
