Frequency Identification Method of Optical Power Meter

The frequency identification function in an optical power meter allows the device to detect modulated test tones from a light source, enabling fiber identification, continuity testing, and fault isolation.

How Frequency Identification Works

Optical power meters measure the power of light in optical fibers, but when paired with a modulated light source, they can also detect specific modulation frequencies. These frequencies are not inherent to the meter itself but are carried by the light signal to help identify individual fibers or verify signal continuity.

The OP

M reads the modulated signal and displays the corresponding frequency, often matching it to a pre-set tone.

Common Frequencies

Standard test tones used for fiber identification include 270 Hz, 1 kHz, and 2 kHz. Advanced meters can detect multiple tones, sometimes up to 12 different frequencies, which is particularly useful for ribbon fiber testing, where each fiber in a ribbon may be assigned a unique tone. This allows technicians to quickly identify the correct fiber at the far end of a cable.

Practical Applications

Fiber Identification: By detecting the modulation frequency, the OPM helps technicians distinguish one fiber from many in a bundle or ribbon cable. Continuity Testing: The meter confirms that a signal can pass through the fiber from one end to the other, ensuring proper connectivity. Fault Isolation: If a fiber is broken or misconnected, the absence or mismatch of the expected frequency helps locate the problem.

Using the Function

Many OP

Ms have a Wave ID or frequency identification mode. Activating this mode allows the meter to automatically detect the modulation frequency of the connected light source and display it on the screen. Users can often toggle between wavelengths and units while maintaining the frequency identification function.

This makes it a versatile tool for both single-mode and multi-mode fiber networks.

Summary

The frequency identification function enhances the utility of an optical power meter beyond simple power measurement. By detecting modulated test tones, it provides efficient fiber identification, continuity verification, and fault detection, which is essential for maintaining complex fiber optic networks.
