How to install fiber optic cable connectors in ducts

Fiber optic cables in ducts can be installed using either the pulling method for short distances or the air blowing method for longer runs, with careful attention to handling, bend radius, and tension limits.

Preparation and Site Survey

Before installation, conduct a thorough site survey to identify potential hazards such as sharp edges, high temperatures, or machinery that could damage the cable. Develop a cable pulling plan detailing the route, intermediate access points, splice locations, and responsibilities of the installation team. Ensure the installation area is clear of debris and obstacles, and verify compliance with local building codes and regulations.

Protective material on cable reels should remain in place until installation begins, and cable ends should be capped to prevent moisture ingress.

Cable Handling Guidelines

Fiber optic cables are sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces. Always follow the cable manufacturer's specifications for maximum tensile load and minimum bend radius. For example, a stranded loose tube cable may have a maximum pulling tension of 600 lbF (2,700 N), and the minimum working bend radius is typically 15 times the cable diameter during installation.

Use figure-eight loops when uncoiling cable to prevent twisting, with loop sizes generally 2–4 meters for standard cables.

Installation Methods

Pulling Method

The pulling method involves manually or mechanically pulling the cable through pre-installed ducts using a pre-installed rope or pull-line. This method is suitable for short distances, typically up to 200–300 meters between manholes or handholes. The cable may need to be stored in coils at each access point.

Pull-lines can be made of wire rope, polypropylene, or aramid yarn, with low-elasticity materials preferred to minimize tension fluctuations. Lubrication may be applied to reduce friction and prevent damage to the innerduct.

Air Blowing Method

The air blowing method uses compressed air to propel the cable through the duct, often combined with a mechanical pushing force near the duct inlet. This method is preferred for longer distances and ducts with multiple bends, as it reduces manpower requirements and installation time. Standard fiber optic cables, microduct cables, and armored or unarmored cables can be installed using this method.

Continuous lengths of over 1,000 meters are possible depending on duct conditions.

Best Practices

Avoid sharp bends, turn-backs, and pulling over edges. Maintain smooth curvatures and respect the cable's minimum bend radius. Do not exceed the maximum recommended tensile load.

Use protective barriers when uncoiling cable on surfaces to prevent pedestrian or vehicular interference. Document the installation process, including cable routes, tension applied, and any deviations from the plan. By following these procedures, fiber optic cables can be safely and efficiently installed in ducts, ensuring long-term performance and reliability.
