How to raise fire cable trays

Fire-rated cable trays should be elevated using proper support hardware, firestop barriers, and compliant installation techniques to ensure safety and prevent fire spread.

Support and Elevation

To raise cable trays safely, use mechanical supports such as V-clips, L-clips, beam clips, or threaded rods attached to ceilings, beams, or walls. These supports allow trays to be suspended above floors or other surfaces while maintaining stability and load-bearing capacity. Ensure the tray material (steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, or fiberglass) and thickness are sufficient to support the weight of cables without deformation.

For multi-tier or wide trays, distribute supports evenly to prevent sagging.

Fireproofing Measures

Elevated trays must maintain fire safety compliance. Install firestop barriers at floor or wall penetrations using UL-listed products such as 3M fire pillows, moldable putty, or intumescent caulks. These materials seal gaps around the tray, preventing fire and smoke from spreading vertically through the building.

Fire partitions should be installed every 20 meters along long tray runs to limit fire propagation.

Cable Arrangement and Safety

Segregate power and signal cables in separate trays to reduce interference and overheating. Avoid overloading trays; excessive cable density increases fire risk. Apply fire-retardant coatings to cable bundles near exits or high-risk areas.

Use thermal cameras or heat detection systems to monitor elevated trays for hotspots.

Installation Tips

Keep tray runs as short and straight as possible to simplify maintenance and reduce fire hazards. Ensure proper grounding of metal trays to prevent electrical discharge. For retrofits, adjustable mounting brackets allow raising trays without major structural modifications.

Protective sleeves or spacers can prevent abrasion when suspending cables below or above trays. By combining mechanical elevation, firestop barriers, and careful cable management, you can safely raise fire-rated cable trays while minimizing fire hazards and ensuring compliance with safety standards.
