What does the multimode label on an optical fiber mean

A multimode optical fiber (MMF) is a type of fiber designed to carry multiple light paths, or modes, simultaneously, typically used for short- to medium-distance data transmission.

What Multimode Means

The "multimode" label indicates that the fiber has a larger core diameter, usually 50 or 62. 5 micrometers, which allows multiple light rays to propagate at the same time through the fiber core. This contrasts with single-mode fiber, which has a much smaller core (~9 micrometers) and supports only one light path.

The larger core of multimode fiber simplifies alignment and installation, making it cost-effective for in-building, campus, and data center networks.

How It Works

Multimode fibers support multiple propagation modes, meaning light can travel along different paths within the core. While this allows more light to be transmitted, it also introduces modal dispersion, where different modes arrive at the receiver at slightly different times. This limits the maximum transmission distance and bandwidth compared to single-mode fiber.

Typical distances for 10 Gigabit Ethernet over multimode fiber range from 33 meters (OM1) to 550 meters (OM4/OM5) depending on the fiber type.

OM Classification

Multimode fibers are classified into OM1 through OM5 based on core size, bandwidth, and performance with laser or LED light sources: OM1: 62. 5 µm core, LED source, 200 MHz·km bandwidth, max 10G Ethernet ~33 m, orange jacket. OM2: 50 µm core, LED source, 500 MHz·km, max 10G ~82 m, orange jacket.

OM3: 50 µm core, laser-optimized (VCSEL), 2000 MHz·km, 10G up to 300 m, aqua jacket. OM4: 50 µm core, enhanced laser-optimized, 4700 MHz·km, 10G up to 550 m, aqua jacket. OM5: 50 µm core, wideband multimode for short-wave division multiplexing (SWDM), 28,000 MHz·km, supports multiple wavelengths, lime green jacket.

Applications

Multimode fiber is ideal for short-range, high-speed networks such as: Enterprise LAN backbonesData center rack-to-rack or row-to-row connectionsCampus networks connecting multiple buildingsAudio/video transmission and surveillance systems It is compatible with LED or VCSEL light sources, which are less expensive than single-mode lasers, reducing overall system cost.

Key Advantages

Lower cost for fiber and transceiversEasier installation due to larger core and relaxed alignment tolerancesHigh bandwidth over short distancesSupports multiple protocols like Ethernet, InfiniBand, and Fibre Channel In summary, the "multimode" label identifies a fiber optimized for short- to medium-distance communication, capable of transmitting multiple light modes simultaneously, with cost-effective deployment and high bandwidth for enterprise and data center applications.
