Distribution Box Incoming and Outgoing Line Scheme

A distribution box receives power through incoming lines, distributes it via busbars, and supplies multiple outgoing circuits with protection and control devices.

Incoming Line Scheme

The incoming line is the point where electrical power enters the distribution box from the main supply or substation. It typically includes: Main Circuit Breaker (MCB) or Air Circuit Breaker (ACB): Acts as the primary protection and switching device for the incoming supply, allowing the power to be safely connected or disconnected. Busbars: Conductors that distribute incoming power to multiple outgoing circuits.

Some distribution boxes use double busbar systems to increase reliability, allowing one busbar to be isolated for maintenance while the other continues supplying power. Dual Power Switch (if applicable): In systems with backup power, a dual power switch automatically transfers supply from the main source to a backup source during outages. The incoming line may be single-phase or three-phase depending on the system voltage and load requirements.

In substations, incoming lines can be arranged in double circuits to share load and enhance reliability.

Outgoing Line Scheme

The outgoing lines carry power from the distribution box to various loads, such as lighting, motors, pumps, or other equipment. Key elements include: Outgoing Circuit Breakers (MCB or MCCB): Protect each outgoing feeder from overloads and short circuits. Feeders: Conductors connecting the distribution box to the load.

Feeders can be categorized by load type, e.g., lighting, motor, or general-purpose distribution. Load Control Devices: Star-delta starters or DOL starters may be used for motor loads, while APFC panels may be connected for power factor correction. Each outgoing line is carefully rated to match the connected load, ensuring reliable operation and protection.

The distribution box layout ensures that each load can be independently isolated for maintenance or fault conditions.

Typical Layout Overview

Incoming Supply → Main Breaker → BusbarBusbar → Outgoing Breakers → Feeders → Load EquipmentOptional Dual Power Switch → Automatic Transfer to BackupProtection Devices: Overcurrent, short-circuit, and sometimes surge protection for each outgoing line This scheme ensures safe, reliable, and flexible power distribution within buildings or industrial facilities, allowing maintenance without interrupting the entire system. By understanding the incoming and outgoing line scheme, engineers and electricians can design, operate, and troubleshoot distribution boxes effectively, ensuring continuity of supply and protection of connected equipment.
